Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute was established in the year 2009 by the Sri Muthukumaran Educational Trust. The trust was formed in the year 1983 as a Public Charitable and Educational Trust under the guidance of its trustees Smt. R. Gomathi Radhakrishnan, Thiru. A. N. Radhakrishnan and Tmt. D. Meenakshi Ammal.

It is approved by National Medical Council (NMC), NABL, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is been accredited by NABH. The college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The campus of Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute is sprawled over beautifully landscaped 27.11 acres of land.
