General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) is a three-year, six-month diploma programme aimed for those interested in a career in clinical nursing. The curriculum teaches applicants how to care for people who are unwell or injured in order to help them recover completely. Although the curriculum of the course differs per university, GNM courses are aimed to educate students for the clinical approach to patient care. Some universities' curricula include a six-month internship at the end of the term, and the diploma is only awarded once the students finish this internship. The curriculum, also known as DGNM in some colleges, is designed to prepare general nurses to fulfill nursing responsibilities successfully in hospitals and other places where their services might be required.
The three types of GNM Nursing courses that are commonly pursued in India are Basic and Post Basic:
Basic GNM
Basic GNM is the most popular type of GNM course. It is a bachelor's degree program that trains students to acquire nursing skills and knowledge to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients suffering from various diseases. The course is designed to create general nurses who can effectively work in healthcare teams in hospitals and other healthcare organizations.
Post Basic GNM or Post Basic BSc Nursing
Post Basic GNM or Post Basic BSc Nursing is an advanced course where candidates explore more advanced knowledge through classroom education, clinical teachings, and educational visits. There is a good scope for candidates who complete this course to get jobs in nursing educational institutions, clinics, public health centers, and other healthcare organizations. The regular version of this course lasts for 2 years, whereas the basic version lasts for 3 years.
In today's age, students have a plethora of courses to choose from and pursue their studies accordingly. To help students understand the benefits of the GNM nursing programme, here are some key reasons why they should consider pursuing it:
