Colleges, universities and Institutions in India are been globally recognized with the advancements and tech-enabled education. In order to impart excellent education across the globe, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India has a reservation of seats for NRI’s (Non-Resident Indians) and Foreign Nationals.


In today’s date, India is the second largest country to become the centre of higher education for the students all across the globe. The peaceful environment, learning atmosphere and the welcoming attitude of the country is the major factor that attracts students all across the world to pursue their education here. There are more than 799 universities, 39,700 colleges and 11,923 standalone institutes in India.

Now the question arises what actually is NRI quota?

A special quota allotted by the premier institutes of India to the Non-Resident Indians is termed as the NRI quota. This NRI quota can also be availed by the Overseas Citizens of Indian (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and even the Foreign Nationals. Students with NRI quota can reserve their seats for their studies in almost every field in India. The seats by NRI quota are available for Medical, Nursing, Law, Veterinary, Management, all branches of Engineering and other courses too. There are several private colleges in India with reserved seats for NRI’s for the deserving students, who wish to return and study in their native country.

Supernumerary Quota


Supernumerary Quota is termed as SNQ. It is a special reserved quota that allows Foreign nationals and NRI’s who are comparatively economically weak. This quota allows students to get admission to some specific colleges with reduced tuition fees. The tuition fee is 30-40% less compared to the management seats. The seats which are over and the above the sanctioned intake approved by the appropriate authority and Government are basically the Supernumerary seats.


Apart from this, under normal NRI quota, the Government of Karnataka reserves 15% seats for Non-Resident Indian / Foreign students who want to pursue their higher education in India.

What is the eligibility criterion for NRI seats?

As per the instructions by the Supreme Court of India, the eligibility criteria for NRI seats are as following-


  • Either of the one parents of the student must be an NRI and shall ordinarily be residing abroad as an NRI.

  • The person, by whom the student is being sponsored, should be a first degree relation and must be residing abroad as an NRI.

  • The students with no parents/near relatives and taken in care of by some other relatives are to be considered after the guardian has bona fide treated the student as a ward and filed an affidavit showing interest in the affairs of the student and relationship with the student and such person should be an NRI and ordinarily residing abroad.

  • *Nearest relative is termed to someone who is real brother or sister of the student’s parents, maternal or paternal grandparents, and first degree maternal and paternal cousins.

Academic Eligibility

For medical/dental

  • The candidate must hold a valid passport. The candidate must have cleared Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 or an equivalent examination with 60% or above marks.

  • The NRI students seeking admission in the top medical, dental and nursing colleges should first sit in NEET exams. The students must qualify NEET conducted by the Testing Agency (NTA). After qualifying the exam, the students need to register for counseling with the Indian Examinations Authority.

  • Age limit: The minimum age for giving NEET-UG is 17 years, and the maximum age limit is 25 years.

For engineering

  • The candidate must hold a valid passport. The candidate must have cleared Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12 or an equivalent examination with 60% or above marks.

  • The NRI students seeking admission in top engineering colleges of India need to qualify concerned entrance exams for various states and even the country. The colleges approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) reserve a maximum of 5% seats in each course for NRI quota. Other colleges in India reserve up to 15% of the seats for all NRI’s.

  • Age limit: The minimum age for giving NEET-UG is 17 years, and the maximum age limit is 25 years.

For NRI candidates

  • Residential proof of parents- Resident certificate of candidate’s parents issued by the Embassy of the country they are residing and complying the Income Tax Rules

  • Identity proof of the candidate- Passport/Visa/ Resident Visa of the candidate

  • Employment proof- Employment letter of either parent

  • Residential proof of the candidate- Citizenship of the candidate

  • Income proof- Income Tax Documents required as per the Income Tax Act 1961

  • Education proof- Study certificate of the candidate

For NRI sponsored candidates

  • Residential proof of sponsor- Resident certificate of candidate’s parents issued by the Embassy of the country they are residing and complying the Income Tax Rules

  • Identity proof of the sponsor- Passport/Visa/ Resident Visa of the sponsor

  • Residential proof of the candidate- Citizenship of the candidate sponsored

  • Income proof of the sponsor- PAN/Tax document of the sponsor

  • Education proof of the candidate- An affidavit from the candidate
