Christian Medical College was established in the year 1942 by an American missionary, Dr Ida S. Scudder, founder of the college. The institute is registered as a voluntary, non-profit organization. It is approved by National Medical Council (NMC), World Health Organization (WHO) and is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The institute is been operated by the Christian Church leader across the country.

Christian Medical College is one of the top medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. It is a privately run medical institute, hospital and research centre. The college has 143 different specialized departments from which the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical immunology provides services to more than 40,000 patients a year.
